About CEHI statistics
Welcome to the South of Tyne and Wear Compendium of Health Related Statistics. This document contains a comprehensive range of information describing the demography, health and lifestyles of the populations of Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland. It accompanies the Annual Reports of the Directors of Public Health in each of the three areas.
The contents of the compendium are organised in two distinct ways. Firstly they are organised by clinical theme e.g. circulatory disease or cancer. There are fifteen different chapters listed on the right hand menu. Secondly data items are organised in a way which reflects three distinct issues when considering health improvement:
- Adding years to life - tracks those indicators which monitor length of life such as life expectancy or premature mortality (deaths under 75 years).
- Adding years to life - looks at those indicators which measure the quality of life such as the prevalence of chronic disease
- Reducing Health Inequalities - examines indicators which can be measured for small populations such as people living in electoral wards. By comparing patterns of access against maps of local health, social or economic inequalities, it is possible for all health and social care services to check whether they are reaching those sections of the community where need is greatest.
